I was wondering when they give you questions like 1+sintheta = x

You would draw the graph of y=1+sintheta and y=x. But how do you find x? You can graphically show the number of solutions these two graphs has but how can you solve it algebraically for the 'x' value of the point of intersection?

This is known as a transcendental equation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcendental_equation). We can't find closed-form solutions for your equation in terms of elementary functions.
