I've had a user ask me about the timetabling system at USYD and I figured it would probably be beneficial if I responded publicly as other users out there may be confused as well, especially because our system is a bit different.

In regards to when the timetabling unit will be make timetable creation available, this typically occurs about 2 weeks before semester begins. I checked the timetable I uploaded on Facebook for S1 2011 and it was exactly 14 days before the first day of semester. Consequently, I'll have a punt and say that you can start making them mid-February.

To view what times lecture and tutes/labs/pracs have been allocated for a particular unit, visit the following link:

http://web.timetable.usyd.edu.au/

Keep in mind, this could be subject to change and this does not include information on the venue. You will also need your unikey to log in to this system.

Our personal timetables are generated automatically but you have the option to pick certain times and days which you want excluded so it can regenerate a timetable with said parameters. This is quite useful if there's a particular day you're working. You cannot pick individual times yourself and put them altogether.

If you have any issues with your timetable, the university has a service in the first couple of weeks (correct me if I'm wrong) which allows you to discuss with the Timetabling staff about any issues you may have and they MAY manually change your timetable if you're having difficulty getting the times using the online system.

The only addition I have is that if you have to go to the time tabling unit in person to try to change your timetable go early, or be prepared to queue. The line is normally quite long.

The only other thing I can say is that the law faculty is getting stricter regarding changing timetables - last year they cut off the ability to make changes on the computer quite early, then also didn't allow the time tabling unit to make changes - the only way was to submit a form to the law faculty and you had to provide evidence (eg. If you needed to change for work reasons you had to show you needed to work otherwise you would be financially disadvantaged).
