Is the thesis (and topic sentences) meant to simply be the question reworded? - unless you're focusing on a particular theme of the text then you should mention that?

Because this is what I thought at first, until a friend told me that you need to perfect the thesis and make it sound in depth otherwise it'll just seem like you're reiterating a prepared essay and sounding very average because 70% of the state will most likely reword the question as well..

Your thesis is essentially what you're arguing. So it is a rewording of the question to an extent, but it's also a summary of your overall argument and your approach to the concept.
