"Identify and explain the roles of the major players in the Kokoda campaign and the defence of Papua New Guinea. (think generals and armies and heroes)"

This might be a bit late, but, oh well.

I must admit that I do not know much about this. There is a good doco DVD to watch, and it used to be on iView, called 'Kokoda' based on the book by Paul Ham. Have a watch of that, as it covers your research question very well.

From what I can remember, the major players that you should mention are--

John Curtin
Battles of Buna and Gona
the Battle of Guadalcanal
Tomitaro Horii
fuzzy-wuzzy angels (the New Guineans that got wounded Australian soldiers back to medical aid stations)
