Doing a Chem assessment... ><!

I was wondering, if you want to test drinking water for copper, can you just add sodium hydroxide and see if it forms a precipitate? Is the amount of copper ions in water (like...0.5mg/L) enough to even form a precipitate??

If anyone can help, it would be sooo appreciated!! *holds out cake* Thankyou!!!!

Well I have NO idea whether this is any help...but I'll try (and hope to win the cake!)

We did a prac today where u ground up Copper stone, cover it with Sulfuric Acid (level 3) and then the top stuff... thats the copper. So then you bring it to boil just to finish the reaction, filter it off, and stick the elecotrodes in, which will attract the copper. So ... I guess you could add sulfuric acid ... but then when the boiling happens, the water will boil off ... but the copper will still be there?

lol ok thats what we did to do with copper so maybe you can use that ... somehow ... :p *grabs cake and runs away with evil laugh*
