Hiya,

Although it's old news that Crennan J is the latest J to be added to the High Court bench, AustLII has only just got around to publishing the transcript of the swearing in ceremony. Just thought I'd share it in case any other law students were interested;

Ceremonial - Crennan J - Swearing-in [2005] HCATrans 895 (8 November 2005)

Speakers include Gleeson CJ, Phillip Ruddock (Attorney-General), John North (President of the Law Council), Glenn Martin SC (representing the President of the Australian Bar Association), Kate McMillan SC (Chairman of the Victorian Bar) and Crennan J.

Does this mean her husband can't appear in the HC when she's sitting?

Also - Austlii has been sucking a big fat one the last few weeks.

Wow - I can actually remmeber the answer to this one from LLJ this semester!:

NSW Barristers' Rules said:
A barrister must refuse a brief if the brief is to appear in a contested hearing before the barrister’s parent, sibling, spouse or child or a member of the barrister’s household, or before a bench of which such a person is a member (unless the hearing is before the High Court of Australia sitting all available judges).
I think there are mirror provisions in all jurisdictions ...

Maybe this will prompt Heydon to talk more now that he's not the new kid on the block

Im just worried about the inevitable confusion when writing essays.....I am willing to bet right now I will at least once mix up my b's and c's when talking about the two judges...uh oh!

A part of me longs to see a sitcom based on Crennan's first week, where the other judges relentlessley break her in through intricate hazing rituals, made all the more awkward by the fact she's only the second female to ever get there. As the series progresses she would grow from a hilariously bumbling newbie into an empowered, independant woman whom the other judges view with respect. It would star Sean Connery.

Dammit, holidays rot the mind...

Personally, I think it would make a fantastic comedy, kind of like Seinfeld, as depicted in the photo below.

(Other cast members not pictured: Callinan J as Newman the postman, Heydon as the Soup Nazi - and I'm not yet too sure about what role Hayne should play ...)

Hope you enjoy :)

Although she didn't say a word in the first couple of her hearing days... Crennan has actually piped up a few times since then... probably spoken more than Heydon did in the first 6 months in the Full Court.
