It has indeed been asked before. It won't matter in NSW because there are no prerequisites in NSW universities, but if you want to go interstate you will have trouble.

That said, some background biology knowledge as well as chemistry comes in very handy in lessening the learning curve at the beginning, which is steep enough as is. I found that chem is sort of assumed knowledge - lots of stuff could go over your head if you have done none since year 10, but it's not that hard to catch up. Just easier if you don't have to.

Oh definitely high school science helps - a bit - but I was talking in terms of eligibility for entry. NSW universities still have assumed knowledge, but they don't exclude you on basis of high school subjects.

Same as any other specialisation. Get MBBS. Be intern. Apply for training position with appropriate college. Be registrar. Finish training, be anæsthetists.

Focus on getting into med first. ;)

haha yeh...i fractured my jaw in three places...the big one on my chin was dislaced and moving my teeth around...so the surgeon put some whiz-bang new plate in...he described it as being a 'ladder' plate...it was so he did not have to use like three normal ones...but yeh...friggen hurts. :p

Yow, mandibular fractures suck. Did you live on soup and milk for two months?

As for anæsthesia, good luck. Alvin and I (maybe Wilson too) were thinking that not too long ago, but I've noticed I'm not as keen on it as I once was...I want "my own patients", where when the guy on tv says "see your doctor" they think of me. The money and the conditions for anæsthesia are great, and I honestly do NOT mind having nothing to do most of the time, but I don't just want to be the guy who puts people to sleep and keeps them alive.

yeh i only got the surgery done on wednesday...so soup for 2 months...its gonna be awesome :S

as for being an anesthetist...my reasoning for wanting to be one (besides the fact that it boggles my mind) is that i would rather be giving needles and gas than having to actually make cuts and dig in bodies...obviously it is part and parcel with being a surgeon and im a dickhead for wanting to be one if i cant handle the gore...but yeh, just a personal preference :p but it is a good point you make about wanting to actually work with the patient as such...i never quite thought of it that way.

ps...hopefully i will be down with your medicine jargon one day :p (eg, mandibular)

I just love the word "mandible", maybe I should be a dentist. It's the lower jawbone. More obvious when you think of animals.

Also, you could do medicine and NOT take a surgical specialty. There's a lot more to doctoring than cutting. ;)

Meads,
if you do become a anaesthetist (and I wish you all the very best :D), have you considered how difficult it will be to do your job whilst avoiding seeing what the surgeon is doing? Just a thought... :)

(Besides, what's wrong with surgery?!)

yeh i have thought about that...like obviously if im interested in doing surgery than im able to handle the sight of it, i could probably handle doing it...i would just rather not having to DO the cutting and what not...i find the entire concept of surgery extremely interesting...and i could handle spectating :p
