so apparently you can get an atar by studying 4 languages and 2 units of english, WTF

I think you considerably underestimate the difficulty of studying so many languages at once. Also from my understanding, unless you are a native speaker, the language subjects are hard to bludge in if you want good marks.

Im not underestimating the difficulty of studying a language or in this case multiple languages, i just think of the idea and validity of being able to do such subject combinations wierd.

People can do english, three sciences + maths and get an atar. I don't see the problem with doing 4 languages. In any case, doing four languages would be crazy and involve a ridiculous amount of effort and dedication.

I do recall someone, either from last year or the year before, who did three languages (French, German and Italian I think) and topped nearly every single one.

But they don't. Most people who do a language for the HSC have learnt it for at least 6 years. Doing three though, would not only require time, but also some talent.
