hello,
well i wanna start a lil study group with my friends for ceertain subjects....but i was wandering if any past hsc kids could tell us what we should do during a study time as a group, like how did you study with your group.....? did u just talk write points down etc etc....

you can do what you like, but i think you should either

A. Go though past exam questions and discuss with the others what you think you could write about and then see what the others would write. Often others will think of good things that you would never have thought of and you will think of things that they would never have thought of.

B. You can go though the syllabus, and discuss the "dot points" (for subjects with dot points).

C. You can just study at your own pace, and if you encounter a problem ask the others.

Hmm.. actually i'm not really sure what you should do, but I do know that as long as the conversations stick to study related things, this is a great idea.

yeah true.. most people will just end up socialising, instead of talking about actual hsc related work. however if you get the right people, it can work out it doesn't always end like this.

I agree, pick the right people. Try not to get your best buddies as you may end up mucking around and doing f all.

Probably have like a trial period, if someones not contributing or anything, simply tell them to get their act together or get out.

I would probably do past paper questions, (sometimes we have access to a whiteboard so thats great).
Also clarifying concepts or methods etc would be good. If a person still doesnt get it, then maybe get someone else to explain.

wrong, although they usually don't end up being productive.

If your doing a study group with people you can't work with (eg. the dickheads who distract you in class) you deserve to fail.

i think you need to have time where you study on your own, and time where you study in groups. Group study is really benificial.

I think the most productive way would be normal silentish study where you can raise any problems you have with the others you're studying with.

I went to some shit lecture by TSFX. They said one thing that caught my mind; when you write notes and study in silence you only absorb 10%. If you use visual aids, 20%. 80% will be retained if you verbally say it, they advised me to buy a fucking doll and pretend i was teaching it. I lol'd.


But then i went to the library with 2 friends, who with mind set on task, don't get distracted. We ended doing good group discussion on various economic issues and going through dot points on eco syllabus and fucking oath i still remember most of the shit we talked about 4 weeks ago.


Choose the right people, talk about the right shit and your ready set pew pew go go.

yes.. so true. studying in a group is highly effective. you are more likely to remember and learn, and less likely to get bored of study. You just need to make sure that you talk about the work, not about what you did on the weekend.

The best way to really know that you know something is to teach it to someone else. This method has been severly underestimated in the past. Trust me.. I STILL remember the things that I taught my friend about the Cold War just before the School Certificate exams more than two years ago, for the simple reason that I taught her.

By teaching someone else, you are not only performing an act of revision for yourself, but you are also ensuring that you acutally understand the content that you are teaching. And even if you don't completely understand it, it is a good opportunity to refer to notes/textbooks whatever to help you teach which will in turn increase your understanding.

THEREFORE... I suggest that in a study group you should all work/make notes/do past questions/whatever, on a seperate syllabus point, or whatever you choose to break up the content, and then teach it to each other.

This was the reason why I posted my ramblings on teaching in this particular thread, because the poster wanted to know some techniques for studying in a group setting
