should i drop maths ext 2 (1 Viewer)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me decide whether I should drop maths ext 2 (ideally asap)

My current situation:
I didn't do the best in the first task (definitely below average, was purely aiming to get over 50%), but I know it was my fault as I chose to prioritise studying for another test, and throughout the term I did not keep up with the content that well. I also didn't go tutoring for ext 2 because I wasn't sure if I was keeping it. However, it does feel like I'm giving up quite easily and letting myself down since I only performed badly in one task (and tbh i'm not that mad about my mark, it exceeded my expectations for the amount I studied) because I know I can do alright if I put in the effort. Even so, maths does not come naturally to me and I never expected to do ext 2. I don't think the subject is something I will need for future study as I don't plan on pursuing anything that requires higher level maths (e.g engineering)

pros
- more time to dedicate towards other subjects that I actually enjoy
- no more morning class
- less stress

cons
- would leave me on 10 units which is extremely risky
- would have to move to another class with a new teacher (don't know if they're good at teaching)
- need to relearn all the adv content
- feels like i'm taking the easy way out

Please help! Any thoughts/advice would be extremely appreciated

honestly looks like dropping 4u would be better. youll have more time to focus on the 10 units that you actually enjoy, and relearning the adv content isnt too bad considering they spend around 4 weeks per topic. at the end of the day its up to you, but good luck bro

10 units is actually not "extremely risky" in fact it will go in your favour if you perform well in all 10 units. if you keep 4u and continue to struggle then this is gonna affect your performance in other subjects and ultimately the whole "safety net subject" thing will not be a thing in your case. if you can take the easy way out to a higher ATAR (e.g. 10 units over 12, lower scaling subjects that you enjoy over high scalers that you struggle with) then why wouldn't you lol

If you really wanted to do Ext 2 and you feel like you haven't put in the effort, then I agree, you're cheating yourself from what you could do but personally not doing Ext 2 isn't a big deal, there's no long lasting effects. There's no degree with Ext 2 prereqs but of course its recommended you study it if you do pursue something like Engineering, Physics or Mathematics etc.

Seeing from a logical perspective, you're set regardless with Ext 1 solely. Even if you do change your mind and end up trying to do engineering or computer science then you'll be able to meet prerequisites at least and you would learn the content from university.


I wouldn't drop Ext 2 out of your first internal task performance or if you feel like your garbage (ext 2 "scaling" seems to really benefit those in the 60-80 range so make that what you will), but more out of not requiring as much rigor of math to prepare for future studies + not that much interest/care.

Alright, so the fact that you prioritised another subject's test over 4 unit already kinda answers your question. Extension 2 Maths is not a subject where you wanna dedicate little time to, in fact, I would say people who do Extension 2 subjects dedicate the majority of their studying to them, for good reason of course.

Okay @grainybred what are you planning to do for your future study, don't tell me you're doing Acturial studies. This is going to be a bad decision because already going into uni you need 4U to keep afloat. I am saying this to confirm if Extension II is worthwhile to keep given your performance.

If you don't like a subject - don't do it. It seems you don't like/aren't willing to put in the effort for 4U - which is completely fine if you like other subjects! Have you checked UAC degrees to see if there are any subject prerequisites (e.g Maths Advanced) as well as HSC plus bonus points? (e.g Actuarial rewards 3 bonus points for an E4 in 4U whereas you can get 5 bonus points for most other subjects with a B6 in Maths Advanced)

10 units is not risky at all - and it's far better to do 10 units than doing 12 units with a subject you don't really like. Don't feel like you're taking the easy way out - focusing on other subjects is not something to ashamed of.

thanks for your concern i am definitely not planning on pursuing actuarial studies or anything requiring ext 2 maths.
