Should Australia end the age of entitlement?

The role of government is finally decided as Tony Abbott embraced most of Labor’s welfare state measures and conceded that his attempts to undermine the welfare state were defeated. Australia’s 40 year debate about the role of government is over and Labor has won. The election of the Whitlam government in 1972 marked the beginning of the constant expansion of the welfare state service delivery. Whitlamism declared that the essential services of a decent society could only be delivered via the collective resources of the state. The Hawke and Keating governments honoured Gough’s legacy via medicare, national superannuation, mass university, education and environmental protection. The Rudd and Gillard governments have continued this pattern via Disability Care, paid parental leave, public housing reform and the NBN. Each of the markers of a modern, united, cradle to grave welfare state is now in place. Over the four decades public expenditure has risen from 27 per cent to 39 per cent of GDP.
