Hello all

I'm going into Year 12 this year, and am aspiring to become an astrophysicist/astronomer.

However, I've heard that the astro-anything job market in Australia is very much limited, for whatever reason. This has left me wanting to do a double degree in Science (with a physics major, possibly at UQ) and something else, rather than Advanced Science with a major in astrophysics, as it may be too narrow.

I'm hoping the double will improve my short-term prospects, and that I can come back to astrophysics somewhere down the track, where traveling overseas may be a viable option.

So my questions are:
* Am I right to cut a broader path now, while I have the chance?
* What might best compliment science? I'm looking at engineering, computational science, or business.
* Is UQ a good choice for science/any of the above?

Any feedback or answer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

TBH you're better off moving overseas (US) if you want a career in astronomy not to mention you need a minimum of a PhD to be even considered for basic research position (extremely rare in Australia). UQ is good for science and engineering would be a good discipline to fall back on.
