probably around that, one question as well, does the higher the mark increase the scaled mark? for example if i got 80 and that gets me lets say 85, will 90 get me 98?

I think the top people are scaled the most. The more you lean towards the middle (from above), the less you're scaled. If you're in the middle, you're not scaled much, and if you're below average, you're scaled down.

I think.

You'll be surprised at the number of people that actually get 98. Basically about top 5 or so in the state and that's about it.

Hmm..I don't think the very top are scaled more, I think that the top people receive less positive or negative influence though there is some as you see this across all the courses. But if it's any help to you, this question was asked of my teacher a short time ago (so many people in our class are asking what it takes to get 90 rather than studying to get it *sigh*) and he said that if you achieved mid 80s raw then you were easily into the band 6 range.

The scaling process is nowhere as simple as that. There are _a lot_ of factors taken in account so it cannot be determined from simple sums like that. Though, they may give you an idea, it wouldnt be all that accurate. Also, you cant really compare with your predecessors as their situation are comparitively different to yours so the likely outcome are probably going to be different.

Like said, give it your best shot. Be it 95+ or not. ;)

I would guess that a raw examination mark of ~78-82/100 would align to a Band 6 - this seems to be the case for both Biology and Physics, though subjects vary in how they are aligned.

So to get 88+, you'd probably need a raw mark of around 75-80/100 but there isn't enough data to support this - it's only my guess.

The reason why so few people can reach the high 90s (95+) is not because the raw band cut-off is high, but imo it's because the markers are quite pedantic and really make students work for their marks.

oh those cunts, i was hoping 85~ raw gets me 92 or so
It probably would. Depending on the way the exam is aligned, a raw mark of 85/100 would probably get you 91-93/100. Getting the raw mark of 85/100 is the difficult part though.

thats wierd because my 80 in my trial got only scaled to 86 and i got the shits =/

Your school wouldn't have aligned your trial exam mark the same way as BOS does. No-one knows what the actual raw Band 6 cut-off is for Chemistry...and what's more, it changes every year. However, given the data for Physics and Bio for the last couple of years, I'd guess that the cut-off would be 78-82/100 - it could be less, it could be more.

and ill take a stab and guess that your UAI isn't calculated on your raw HSC mark because they don't know it?

Raw HSC marks are scaled and the scaled marks are used in the calculation of your UAI. This is done by UAC, whereas BOS holds the information regarding the raw marks.

sweeet :D that means if I get like ~85 in chem HSC (raw) and most my other subjects and it only spits out like 88 it could be alot higher after scaling?

No, you have no idea what you're talking about.

There's no direct correlation between aligned marks (what's reported on your HSC Record of Achievement) and scaled marks (used for your UAI). It's really best not to worry about raw marks and what they may or may not scale to. It just makes things more confusing, particularly at this stage when there's only a few weeks unitl the HSC.

I'm so confused.
is scaling for chem similar to maths? 2 u that is.
like for maths you have to get about 90/120 to get a band 6. for chem, 78-80/100 like rench said, meaning your internal mark and exam mark both have to be close to this mark?
but last year I got 92 raw internal for maths and 93 as the exam mark on my results sheet, and I got 93.
I've gotten 86 for chem this year, if I got close to this mark in the exams what would happen? my school is shithouse though/
