Does anyone have any predictions on what they think or hope will be in the exam?

Going by the past exams I'm guessing there will possibly be questions on
Punnet Squares or maybe pedigrees
Contributions of a particular scientist
Infectious or non-infectious diseases we've studied
Ethical/social/politcal issues on either Darwin's theory or reproductive technologies/genetic engineering

Its too hard to really say as they can basically put anything that there is on the syllabus, your most likely to get something that has to do with evolution, and they will likely ask about the work of atleast one scientist. Im hoping not too much of the larger mark questions and alot of 1-3 marks questions.

i would expect mendel to be in it. his name hasnt even been mentioned in the past 3 hsc exams. i think the history of malaria will be in it. maybe something to do with B cell or T cells. transgenic species maybe. action potential im expecting for communication. possibly the enzyme activity practical

I want there to be a kidney question. I have never been examined on the kidney, and I want a kidney question. ;)

Ahh kidneys not that hard...filtration, reabsorption, excretion. It would be a pretty big question if it asked to describe each process, usually they only ask about one process such as describe filtration in kidneys

my teacher is a HSC marker (also my school's science head teacher)
she told my class that there is no point going through the past paper since they dont put the old stuffs in, just go through your notes and prac books...

but then, i reckon there'll still those fundamental HSC stuffs in the paper like Darwin/Wallace theory of evolution, Mendal, the double helix, transport of substances in plants and animals, Malaria, etc...

i'm having no troubles with remembering most of the stuffs from the core topics, it's just my optional topic Communication is a pain in the ass

i have been told that in a four year cycle the who syllabus must have been tested in the hsc. that was for chem but it may be the same for bio. in that case it is good to study things never been tested eg mendel, malaria, action potential and myopia hyperopia(communication), methodology for transgenic species, kidney stuff like dialysis (hardly any kidney dps tested before), history of evolutionary theory and social crap, maybe enzyme prac ubt that is harder to guess, T abd B cell interaction.

I have a feeling that malaria will be in it.

I hope Mendel is - l really, really do. I hope thats the 8 mark question.

I know so much, about his monohybrid crosses, dominant and recessive genes, genotype and phenotype and the 3:1 ratio, as well as how his work wasn't recognised until in 1900's (l think?). If l expand on these things will that get me enough for an 8 mark question?

Also luke you mentioned myopia and hyperopia - l hope their in it, just not too many marks or a hard question.

Is the enzyme prac the one where the pH, temperate and substrate concentration is tested on the effect of an enzyme (e.g. rennin)? If so - l've got that one covered :)

yes it is. you can make one up yourself anyway if you know enough about enzymes and substrates and condiditons

Thanks, what about what l said about the mendel info? Would that be enough for an 8 mark question?

biology isnt all about writing a brilliant essay, just as long as you mentioned all the keywords in the markers guideline, use jargons and presented well you can get 7-8...

i'm bad at presenting it and miss some keywords, so i usually score something like 4-6 for those 8mark Qs...

well yeah. they could ask about his work, his conclusions and the reliability of his work (why it was so successful) or something along those lines. that would easily make up 8 marks worth i think
