Hi all.

Im needing some help with a pop art essay that i have to do. the essay question is:

"Pop Art rejected the previous forms of personal expression and looked at the popular culture of the time. It offered its audience something tangible to understand."

Discuss the above statement, defining the Pop Art movement and using one studied artist (warhol, hockney, linchestein, judd) and two of their works to back uyp your answer.

HELP!

Thanks.

Abstract Expressionism (the predecessor to Pop Art) was largely based on the sub-conscious recording of the artists personal experiences/emotions... works were of a dumb-founding nature to the general public (if you looked at a canvas with paint that was flicked and splattered everywhere e.g. Pollock you'd be thinking "what the hell is this" too). Henceforth Abstract Expressionism was considered "High Art" and was reserved for art critics and conissouers who would sit in gallerys for hours just sitting in front of works staring at them, trying to understand them.......

Pop Art was the complete opposite of this! It used Imagery from everyday life (like warhols soup cans - seen in the supermarket). The artists had done something special - they had fused the elements of High and Low art and created an art movement that could be enjoyed by the masses and critics alike...

I suggest you have a look at some info on the Ab Expressionism movement, aswell as the Pop Art movement.. try to find links between the two and get an understanding of the change that took place...

Good Luck : )
