Petrol is composed of short-chain hydrocarbons (mainly octane, C8H18), and is produced from crude oil, a fossil fuel which is non-renewable.

Ethanol is an alkanol, C2H5OH, and contains oxygen (which petrol does not) and can be produced through the fermentation of sugars, making it a renewable fuel.

Just adding, ethanol is made by raw materials CO2, water and sunlight (via glucose), and when it is burnt it returns to CO2 and water which can be reconverted into ethanol.
