explain the difference between ethanol and petrol.

Petrol is composed of short-chain hydrocarbons (mainly octane, C₈H₁₈), and is produced from crude oil, a fossil fuel which is non-renewable.

Ethanol is an alkanol, C₂H₅OH, and contains oxygen (which petrol does not) and can be produced through the fermentation of sugars, making it a renewable fuel.

Just adding, ethanol is made by raw materials CO₂, water and sunlight (via glucose), and when it is burnt it returns to CO₂ and water which can be reconverted into ethanol.
