Not much of a Physical Journey? I mean, he went from the bottom of the hill to the top...

Hey. I did the passion as a related text in my half yearly...
Themes:
Inevitability of a journey:
Jesus asks his father at the beginning "Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass from me... " But He still has to go through with the journey because it has already been predetermined.

The acceptance of the predetermined nature of the journey:
This is revealed when Jesus reaches the end of the journey...
"It is accomplished. Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit..."

The physical journey as a gateway to a spiritual transformation:
this is particularly evident in Simon... At our first encounter with him, he is reluctant to carry the cross, and wants nothing to do with Jesus, stating "I am an innocent man, forced to carry the cross of the condemned." As they continue on the physical journey, however, he undertakes a transformation, and begins to encourage Jesus. By the time they reach the place of the crucifixion, He is devastated at the fate awaiting Jesus, whom He has come to love after only a short physical journey... A high angled shot depicts his despair.

The gruelling nature of the physical journey:
Clos up shot of Jesus while he is undertaking the journey indicates the gruelling nature of the journey- there is blood all over his face. A high-angled shot of him attempting to carry the cross indicates his weak and vulnerable position.

The finality of a journey is questioned:
When Jesus is placed into the tomb, this would form the logical conclusion to the journey, but instead we have a medium shot of Jesus leaving the tomb, panning to a close up shot of his punctured hand. This poses the question as to whether the journey ever truly ends.

Jesus is the epitomisation of the journey of life:
Jesus is the living and breathing example of the metaphorical journy of life. Each step he takes literally brings him closer to his death.

I hope this helps.

God bless.

It depends on in which manner you raise them. You need to be able to talk about a spiritual transformation to refer to the way in which a physical journey can be the gateway to an inner one. You need to make sure that any particularly religious aspects- such as predetermination and resurrection, etc, are presented in such a manner that they are examined simply as part of the text.
