Some key things to remember for Paper 1, Section III (AOS essay).

Read the rubric :

  • [*]demonstrate understanding of the concept of the journey in the context of your study
[*]analyse, explain and assess the ways the journey is represented in a variety of texts
[*]organise, develop and express ideas using language appropriate to audience, purpose and context

The first one involves the concept of the journey. You must talk about a concept. Eg.

• Journeys are beneficial if undertaken with people who can be helpful to your journey
• Journeys are integral for self-growth
• Journeys are profound
• Journeys can be seen as catalysts for change
• Journeys are treacherous so you need to prepare for them
• Journeys can be unpredictable and at times dangerous
• Journeys bestow joy upon the traveller
• Journeys change your values, ideas and aspirations
• Journeys confront and challenge the traveller
• Journeys demonstrate that the grass is always greener on the other side
• Journeys enthuse you to undertake new challenges that will make you happy
• Journeys facilitate reflection about the way you feel about yourself, others and the world
• Journeys facilitate self-realisation
• Journeys illustrate that there are many ways to attain a goal
• Journeys inherently assist in reaffirming your beliefs and ideals
• Journeys inspire you to achieve your personal best
• Journeys lead to discoveries beyond the physical
• Journeys reward the traveller
• Journeys take on a life on their own and cannot be predicted
• Journeys transform the way you look at the world

.. there a many others, so long as you mention at least one. And relate it to your texts, ie. the second part “in the context of your study”.

Sometimes the question may ask for a particular concept, eg. 2006 HSC
“More than anything else, physical journeys are about the interpretation of the new.
Do you agree?
Argue your point of view.”

Now in this case you can disagree and say, with evidence why, that you think journeys are about <insert your concept here>, not the concept of “interpretation of the new”.

The second point is “the ways the journey is represented”. Which is how the composers of the texts explore this concept of journey. So refer many quotes from the text and techniques used in the text.

And the third point, “using language appropriate to audience, purpose and context” means that you need to write in a certain style depending on the audience, purpose and context. Now most of the time you will need to write in essay style and your audience will be intelligent people, ie. the examiners, however the question may ask for your to write in a different form, eg. letter to the composer of the text.,etc.
