new subsection: finances (1 Viewer)

i would like to put forward the motion of having a new subforum with the focus on finances.

i think it would be good to have a dedicated section. if there is one for employment, it would be good to see one where you can have info relating to what to do with the money you earn. also, information relating to investments/etc. would be important as there are more uni students on these boards now.

i haven't gone into much detail of what it will include/etc. but would like to know what people think about it.

I guess it'd be a good forum but then doesn't this open up a lil' bit too much liability on BoS's side of things in case someone gives bad advice? I'm no legal expert but it could have dangerous consequences if someone were to give advice, and others blindly followed it?

-bank account suggestions every month
-centrelink
-investments for dreamers

All 4 have answers that can be found by simply doing a search most times.

redruM: For australian equities, check out sharescene.com.au and hotcopper.com.au (beware of rampers though). For technical analysis (and some economy stuff) go to elitetrader.com. I've yet to find somewhere that covers fundamentals of commodities.

I wouldn't try any sort of specific stock discussion trheads here, most probably wouldn't know what they were doing and you might get some sharks amongst it all. Don't forget the majority of people on these forums would be worried if they have money in case their car breaks down or if they can afford that holiday overseas. Very few would be in a position to effectively comment on investments. Same as employment, I see unemployed high school leavers disagreeing with me that IT is a bad place to be right now and has been since early 2000.

The other sections usually have updated info and news, there is only so much you can do with finances/money before it becomes repetitive. The way to make money hasn't changed much. The tax rates might change but everyone would be better off getting official info, same with centrelink. As for bank account info it just gets asked and I always pump HSBC and citibank, the St George people always pump St George, you get a few NAB people pumping their own and no one agrees that the other bank really does offer a better deal

The fact that someone doesn't have any money to invest shouldn't stop them from learning about it. The best way to learn is to try (paper trades are usually good when starting out), after reading at least a few books of course.

I do agree that there may not be enough demand to justify it's own forum though.

By the lengthy posts made by people I am sure you will excuse us for not jumping in on every investment post restating the same things over and over. I still don't think this is the place to discuss investments, you can see that 3 to 4 people jump in and really think and justify their answers and try to give people information on other places to research things instead of just one liners. It's not a light topic, sure i have no problem waxing lyrical about it all, doe hasn't been seen in ages and seeing the types of other responses perhaps a sticky with resources would be better served for these topics.

I don't think that anybody is that naive, and if they are then Mr Market will take their money one way or another, regardless of what anyone says.

If you can't fill it out yourself what makes you think other high school or uni students can tell you how to do it? The laws change every year and rulings on what is allowable and not as a deduction do too.

Go get yourself an accountant it's tax deductible.
