Ok so heres the scenario:

I have three computers all connected to an ADSL/Router (DSL-G604T), its DHCP is handling IPs, etc.

The internet works fine on all machines and it is possible to ping the other computers - however it is impossible to access them in any way.

All are down for the same workgroup however none show up on any computer.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sometimes Windows does weird things and occasionally computers won't be shown unless they are sharing something, that doesnt seem to be very common though...Have you tried conntecting directly via IP address?

Yes all are running XP.

How would I connect directly via IP?

When that happens I share a particular folder on that computer and see if the other machines can access it. Or share a network resource and check if it's visible.

But other than that I don't know, I'm a self-professed mucker-arounder with networks :D

The strange thing is that my notebook and one desktop is blocked from accessing the workgroup (dont have permission....list of servers unavailable) eg it cant even see itself however the other desktop can.

All machines have shared files.

Open up "My Network Places"

From Network Tasks choose "Add a network place" and go on from there, entering "\\<computer name>\<shared dir. name>".

Apparently it supports IP addressing too, so you can try entering the computer's ip manually.

Ok it is possible to connect directly between the computers - why isn't the workgroup working then?

And will LAN games work?

Oh and Van - running the wizzard is NEVER a good idea - it ALWAYS balls things up.

what's ur actual issue?

u can ping via computer name, but can't access the same computer through windows explorer when entering the "\\<computer name>" part?

try a combination of what both "Anti" ppl said (anti and AntiHyper)

Both anti's suggestions (esp hyper) were helpful.

It is possible to directly access computers on the network via: \\name\ However this bypasses but doesn't resolve the workgroup problem which I would like to fix for tidyness.

Neither computer A or B can access the workgroup at all, computer C can see only itself in the workgroup. Any ideas what may be causing this/how to fix it?

Which IP settings are you referring to?

all of them

IP Address
Subnet Mask
Gateway
DNS1
(DNS2)

even if it's DHCP, it could be playing up.
try switch to static and see if things work.

Does your router list the machines connected to it? Could be that it's the router blocking visibility.. although I've never had an experience like that before.

and hyper, I chose my nick because it's short, starts with 'a' (so I'm at the top of IRC chan lists :D) and gender-inspecific... :p
