So today, my parent went to an HSC seminar and they said that it is better to have more the 10 units of subjects as it provides a safety net against your ATAR
So my subjects are software engineering, chemistry, biology, investigating science, maths and English standard
I was originally planning to do ten units by dropping chemistry, better safe than sorry

so tell me whether to drop to 10 units or do all the subject that i am doing now

It really depends on what your strategy for the HSC is. If you take 12, you get a "safety net". If you take 10, you have more time to focus on your subjects. I'd like to get in early here before the inevitable "there is no safety net" and "there's no reason to do more than 12" posts, to say that there are benefits to both. Personally, I'm doing over ten, but I have 2 accelerated subjects, so my situation is a little bit different.

People succeed with both 10 and 12 units. There isn't really a better option. I'd recommend 10 units if you don't feel like you can handle the course load of 12, but if you think you can, stick with the 12. It's not exactly a gargantuan task.

Hope this helps,

depends on how you feel with ur current subjects. do you feel as if you have a thorough understanding of your course content, or were you only able to have a brief understanding? do you feel as if your assignments couldve being improved with more time?

There are many things I or other '25ers could say, but what I would emphasise the most is to be kind to yourself. What I mean by this is don't beat yourself up over a 'bad' assessment/exam mark, as at the end of the day, there is always room for improvement, most importantly, the HSC exam can really change your overall mark, even if your rank is 'low'. Second to this, by being kind to yourself, you will find that year 12 will be more enjoyable, as you know that hard work trumps the mark on the paper, as year 12, most of all, teaches you that hard work, even if not recognised, will allow you to persevere. Secondly, do not obsess over ranks; instead, help others. The reason the top 5-10 schools see consistently high ranks each year is the fact that there is a high amount of marks that can be distributed across the cohort. By helping other students, you lessen the gaps between each rank and hence, your cohort has a higher chance of 'success' (whatever this means to you). ATAR is important, but it is not the end of the world, nor does it define you as a person or diminish your hard work. (you probalbly will be working hard). Additionally, consistency is key (you probalbly know this already) - make sure you keep on going, reagrdless of your circumstances. Finally, the year escapes you; it is genuinely scary how quickly it goes, compared to prelims. Someday next year, you will wake up and realise that the past 12 months have flown past you like a bullet train. Have fun, enjoy the year, keep things in perspective (there is always another pathway if you don't get into your program straight away). Next year is the last year you have the luxury of someone else structuring your life, as uni will be more flexible, and yes, I mean luxury. Enjoy next year, you won't have another year like it again. There will be ups and downs, tears of joy, stress and sadness, final goodbyes, graduation, and 18th birthday parties. Basically, give yourself the benefit of the doubt and let life take you on your own journey. I wish you all the best for your endeavours next year.😊

In terms of study:
- Practice questions > rote learning
- Square breathing before exams can help you de-stress (Google it) and put you in a better headspace for optimal performance
- AI can be beneficial for generating practice questions if you run out of questions (put in the relevant syllabus dot-point to ensure it adheres to the parameters)
- Don't be embarrassed to ask for help, especially from your teachers; they want you to do well!
- Getting feedback can be daunting, but it will ultimately be helpful to your improvement
- Make sure you are consistent with your study, as cramming will ultimately lead to stress, which increases cortisol levels and will render your immune system weakened (which is why people can become sick during exam season)
- Comparison is the theif of joy - don't stop studying after getting bad marks, or after trials, even if your rank is supposedly 'cooked', as the HSC exams can help lift up your marks.

Why don't you wait a couple weeks into term 4 to see if you like the year 12 content and then decide if you want to drop a subject? Also, chemistry tends to be a prerequiste for a lot of stem courses. What do you want to study after year 12?

i think chem is gonna be really hard if u don't understand the concepts well so try to understand them well! i'd recommend trying different methods of learning (e.g. maybe reading a textbook is much less effective than watching a video on yt for u) and then do practice questions to consolidate ur knowledge.
don't worry if u don't understand everything in year 11, there's some very confusing stuff that u won't even need for yr 12 (like oxidation/reduction, electrochemistry, subshells)

it's so fucking boring, how did you prefer it over physics?
i thought ur the one who keeps complaining about how physics is all rote learning?

chemistry is actually way worse cause the explanation questions aren't any different and ur actually punished more for not remembering properly
