Hi,

I was just wondering if there was really any point in studying Media & Communications as an undergrad in Uni for a potential career in journalism. Do employers even care about communications degrees or do they focus more on specialisation (e.g. music degree for a music journalist or a degree in poitics or English) and work experience?

Well it depends on your skillset.

Journalism courses at uni place a high priority on practical learning.

Remember, you can always do a specialized course, and then do a Masters of Journalism to build your skillset.

The Masters of Journalism at UTS is very high quality, led by an outstanding Journalism head lecturer.

Hi!

I've always wanted to be a journalist but was told that it was better to do a generalist undergrad degree, so that I had something to write about. I've just finished a bachelor of international/global studies at Usyd and am wanting to do a masters of journalism... the one at UTS looks great, but under entry requirements it says that

"Academic qualifications considered for admission include a bachelor's degree, master's degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate in the same field of study."

... does this mean that only people with a degree in media can enter?

I've also been looking at the Master of Journalism and Communication at UNSW and think it looks great, because it has the option to do a media project or internship. Does anyone have any info on this course??

I've been doing lots of research on the internet about what course is best but all the info has been for undergrads - anyone know which postgrad course is best for journalism???

Thanks heaps!!! :)
