I'm sure this topic has come up countless of times, but I'll try to shake it up and be brief.

No doubt most of us here want to know the best way to study and of course you've heard stories about people bringing in familiar perfumes into an exam room. Here's a way that is proven to assist in studying, listening to quiet instrumental music that doesn't have fast rhythms or heavy bass.

Skipping all the science and history in the beginning at the very bottom is a list of the best type of music to listen too.

1. Try listening to music without lyrics. Lyrics can be distracting, whereas instrumental music heightens concentration.
2. Try listening to slow- or medium-paced music.
3. Try to avoid music with loud drumbeats, like rock or heavy metal.
4. Try to avoid music that is new. You may find yourself paying closer attention to music that is not familiar.
5. Try playing music quietly in the background.
6. Try to continue one style of studying, such as memorization or math, when listening to a particular type of music.

Where to from here? I'm sure some of you will say that studying is all personal preference and what-not and i'm sure it is. But apart from that it'd be productive to talk about and recommend what type of music the above includes.

Soundtracks from blockbuster movies and video games tend to work well, such as Lord of the Rings, Inception, Dark Knight, very movie with Hans Zimmer doing the soundtrack, Oblivion, Final Fantasy.

Postrock music is great for this type of stuff. Explosions in the sky , sigur ros, this will destroy you, Godspeed you! Black emperor, Mogwai and 65 Days of static.

Classical music is good as well, you're best of searching by the name of the composer instead of the name of the performer. Motzart (duh), Wagner, Schubert, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

Electronic music can sometimes be good for the purpose of studying, much of Deadmau5' earlier music is good for this (Random album title, for lack of a better name), xxyyxx self titled album is good as well along with Tycho's 'dive' album.

My other personal recommendations would include Ratatat's discography and Clams Casino's 'instrumental mixtape no.2'

And here's 'The xx - intro' for 10 hours straight

Try listening to Blackmill - I find that I focus really well whilst listening to his tracks.

All of the above except for Blackmill are Post - Rock. All instrumental stuff, very relaxing and great for studying.

Oh and Jazz I find is great for studying. Go to JAZZRADIO.COM and select what style you want and a mini radio will pop up. It's great.

Not sure how suitable this is, but I listened to this when I was studying for my HSC. It's a fantastic instrumental and you may have heard it before from the Matrix - Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougan
