Yo.
I wanna find out what the low down is with the historical investigation..

My "question" if you will, is what event, period or personality influenced modern history/society and to what extent
I have a few ideas floating in my head, but nothing definite yet:

  • Che Guvara
  • King Henry VIII
  • Elizabeth I
  • Feminist Movement
  • Jack the Ripper
  • Great Depression
And a list of possible mediums to "present" to the class

  • Powerpoint
  • Website
  • Time Capsule
  • Scrapbook/journal type thing
My teacher said it was ok to do anything between 19th and 20th Century..

Anyone else getting stuck into an investigation? Taking the time in the holidays to go to a dark secluded corner in the library to study documents on a sunny afternoon?

..anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?
Keep it groovy man.

Hello.

Out of that list that you have made I reccomend you do Che Guevara the most since nobody knows who the hell he is really. You don't have to follow my advice by the way if you don't like the idea. The most important to do is to pick a subject that you are interested in the most since you're not going to have this oppurtunity again to do an assignment of your choice at high school! But make sure it follows the guidelines of being a personaility or event that has influenced modern history. Are you also allowed to do Elizabeth I? My class wasn't since it was a part of our History Extension course. Anyway, some big things that come to my mind now are-

Events
Battle of Poitiers 732 AD
Battle of Hastings 1066
The War of the Roses 1453-1487
The English Reformation
The Spanish Armada 1588
Battle of Blenheim 1704
Battle of Plassey, 1757
The Seven Years' War 1756-1763
The French Revolution 1789
The Haitian Revolution 1791-1804
The Battle of Trafalgar 1805
Battle of Waterloo, 1815
The Crimean War 1853-54
Battle of Gettysburg, 1863
The Battle of Midway 1942 (not sure you can do this if your class is to do 'Conflict In the Pacific' in the HSC.)
The Six Day War in 1967

Personalities
Charlemagne
Martin Luther
King Louis XIV
Catherine 1 of Russia
Napoléon Bonaparte
Queen Victoria
Florence Nightingale
Abraham Lincoln
Emperor Meiji
Empress Dowager Longyu
Lawrence of Arabia
Abraham Lincoln
Franklin D. Roosevelt

I'm doing the Battle of Poitiers in 732AD for my historical investigation. :)

Good luck!

The above suggestions are pretty good. I did FDR in Year 11, and he was a pretty intriguing and amazing personality study. I'm not sure whether Napoleon could be done, as he is part of the History Extension course.

One thing to note, you would be surprised at the amount of people who do Che Guevara as their modern historical investigation. He is pretty well-known, but the fine details of his life, as you might have implied, are certainly a mystery :)

My class couldn't do any topics that were going to be done in the remaineder of the Prelim. course or the HSC.
I did the Meiji Restoration.

I chose as my topic "the leadership of fidel castro in revolutionary Cuba" and found it quite interesting. Lots of information on the net. One thing to take into account if you do this, is the massive difference in perspectives.
Would recommend it though.
