Mercury gets into the water as a waste product of a number of industrial processes.
In developing south american countries they use mercury when gold mining to form a mercury-gold amalgam and then boil off the mercury to leave the gold. The mercury condenses and falls in rain.
Coal fire power plants release mercury vapour.
Production of gold, non-ferrous metal, steel, cement and sodium hydroxide all release mercury vapour.
Volcanos also release mercury
