My view is that if you're interested in Christianity, you should take the most 'scientific' approach, which is learning the original Biblical languages (Hebrew, Greek, Coptic at MQ, Syriac and Aramaic at USyd), and doing ancient history subjects.
I think it's hypocritical and pretty hillarious that all these ministers and cardinals go on about the Bible, and yet they haven't either a) read it in its original languages, and b) studied the time period from an archaeological/historical point of view.
But I'm biased. Most Christians can accept reading whatever translation, listening to someone else tell them (third-, forth-, fifth-, etc, -hand) about early Christian history, and listening to someone tell them what Christianity is.
