For my major project I've been thinking about doing something relating to the rapid rise of the business oligarchs in Russia in the advent of the disintegration of the Soviet Union. I was initially thinking about doing something more recent, perhaps Putin's role in their demise, or Putin's government itself. My teacher advised against choosing a topic that was too recent as my sources would be limited and wouldn't incorporate a broad range of different historiographic views. In the case of Russia, this would be trebled by their highly censored media, however I think I could include that as part of the analysis.
Question: Does anyone have any ideas on a focus question based around the rise/fall of the oligarchs?
OR
Would an analysis of Putin's Government be too restricting in the sense that I would be simply making my work much harder in trying to find the range of sources required?
