As of 1 January 2011 Macquarie Uni has restricted smoking to ten designated smoking areas throughout the North Ryde campus. I haven't heard many people comment on the policy change thus far, so I'm just curious, what do you think about this? I'm happy to hear from smokers and non-smokers alike.

This is an interesting thread, as I'd also be interested in hearing other peoples opinions.

I think this is the beginning of a more sustained push to minimize smoking areas on campus to be honest.

I personally tend to avoid smokers anyway, so I guess this policy doesn't have a giant affect on me.

Also, I don't think many people are really fussed about the policy that much and would make the assumption that some would regard it as common sense/over due/, while others like myself would remain totally indifferent to it.

I'm curious if people actually follow it.

From what I've observed, smokers only observe social norms -- eg not smoking inside someone else's space, not lighting up while talking to someone, etc -- not what signs say.

I assume smokers pretty much ignore the signs?
