LOST: PARTICLE OF INFINITE SPEED. In an unfortunate mishap, the BoS released a particle which attained infinite speed after arctan 1/2 seconds. Warning: Take care when catching, the particle has infinite momentum and does not obey the laws of physics.

If found, please return to the Board of Studies.

FOUND: Proof that maths teachers don't understand physics.

Evidentally Extension 1 students understand physics as well as maths teachers. :rolleyes:

im assuming there was a question in the EXT 1 maths test that violated the laws of physics?

wow, 3u maths students have less understanding of the basic practical concepts of motion than i thought

if i saw any q that didn't abide by physics, i think i'd find other things to blame 1st!!!

surely you people got

x= (2 + tant)/(1- 2tant) for the v=x^2 + 1 question.

well, I ask you, what happens when t = arctan 1/2

Very clever! I hadn't realized until i had a quick glance at the question

For anyone who didnt notice, in 5a) ii

t = arctan (x) - arctan (2)

when t is arctan (1/2) our function reaches pi/2, which is an asymtote for tan
Hence impossible :)

[edit: seems you posted while i was using different logic, still valid tho :)]

since it's velocity and acceleration also involve x, it's travelling at infinite speed accelerated by an infinite force.......

note: yeah, you were right, my post was an additional comment

but when considering motion we cant really have the particle blink out of existence at t=arctan1/2 then arrive suddenly on the other side a huge distance away, so we can't say that t=/= arctan1/2....which means that our particle goes infinitly far away on the positive direction then suddenly reappears infinitly far away in the negative direction...

this quantum physics dilemma seems a bit tough for a 3u maths test!
(i dont know if its actually quantum physics, but that sounds cool:p)

eh? what's arctan? i got like inverse tan + something for 5(a)ii ... i guess that's wrong then?

and i don't think anyone cares about the validity of a question...they just want the marks...

LOL this is great...
hmm.....
maybe this particle dilates time so t will never reach arctan1/2
as an object reaches the speed of light, time will progress slower for that object.

but for this one.. speed can exceed the speed of light.. :confused:
but we can try to sorta explain this
speed = distance/time
but the time slows down for the object... and for us, who observes the object from outside, the time gets very large.. so denominator is getting larger... so speed < speed of light.. hmm... I know this is not a satisfactory explanation

total loffol/11w1w.

i got it right woot. i think.

was it arctan (.5) something artan (2)? where arctan (2) was the constant after integration?
