- Crime breaks society's moral and ethics
- It is what the majority of society opposes
- They are offences against the state, person etc
- Retribution can be served as the outcome of a crime
- They act as a deterrent to others (e.g. a harsh penalty imposed on a convicted criminal to deter others from committing the same crime)
- Crime occurs because people are bored, come from a socially disadvantaged background (e.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders), people that have a history of abuse etc)
- Crime is condemnable (the public or the media can shame offenders if their names are released)
