hey
just a got a few questions ive been ponderin on.....
- if i wanted to study law with adfa... do i still need to get the 99s uai? or is the uai lower?
- what sort of things would i do for the defence force if im a lawer... is there a set number of year im commited to working with them?

nah they dont offer law at ADFA, only arts/science/business/engineering. you can become a lawyer for them after you get your degree at some normal uni.

Hi there

The Australian Defence Force has several university sponsorship schemes, of which, getting a degree through ADFA is just one.

The ADF offers the Undergraduate Scheme which works similar to ADFA in several ways, for example:

1. Your HECS is paid whilst being sponsored,
2. You get paid a wage to study - starts at around $19,000 in your first year and is about $30,000 in your fourth year sponsorship.
3. You receive a book allowance
4. You can get rental assitance
5. Free medical and dental cover
6. AND you are guaranteed a job at the end of it as well!

The most striking differences between ADFA and the Undergraduate Scheme are:

1. If you decide to go to ADFA - you get a degree from UNSW and study in Canberra
If you apply for the Undergraduate Scheme you decide which Uni you go to and you do not have to move to Canberra.

2. ADFA offers sponsorship for the entirety of your degree meaning you do not pay for any of it.
The Undergraduate Scheme can start after your 1st year of a 3 or 4 year degree or after your 2nd year for a 5-6 year degree meaning you pay for the first part of it.

Depending of the job you are applying for in the ADF, the undergraduate scheme isn't restricted to medicine, law, nursing or engineering; for example, the ADF sponsors people studying arts.

The UAI for law will depend on the University you choose. To apply for the scheme you must already be studying law and I would start the application just as you are about to receive your results from second semester in your second year. The process can take a few months so don't wait to apply once you have started 3rd year.

Defence Force lawyers have many roles which can range from specialising in Administrative Law to the Laws of Armed conflict.

Best Advice I can give you is to go to defencejobs.gov.au and search for "Legal Officer" as there is a great job description on the website. I would also call 13 19 01, lodge your details and ask for a Defence Recruiter to call you.

We will be able to put you in contact with someone currently serving as a Legal Officer and you can talk to them directly and find out exactly what its like.

lol yea i know that part... thing is i dont know much about the law careers to start with... so im just looking around ie at the moment im interested in nothing *sighs*...
im not really interested in th 'army' more like dont know much of it... but i dont see how if im doing a law degree.. how engulfed can it be in the whole war thing?

Starting salaries are approx $52000 pa plus housing, medical and dental cover and 17% super, after you graduate.
Whilst you are studying you will have a salary between $18K - $29K (depending on how many years you are sponsored for).

Yes you have to complete at least one full year of studies before you can apply for undergrad positions. This is so we can evaluate your academic potential.

Which means you need to a UAI good enough to get into this course, it doesn't matter which uni.

After you graduate you are required to work within ADF for the time you were sponsored for plus one year.

And yes, if you join this way you are a member of the ADF, which means weapons training and possible deployment overseas.

and wen looking at acadamic potential... how high r u lookin at.. average distinction? high distinct?
when u say sallary while im studying... does that mean the sponsership money?
i wanna be a law student and then graduate... demployemtn overseas i ca see but where did the weapon training come in?

Don't worry about all the questions. Its fantastic that you are interested.

Please note that ADFA does not sponsor anyone studying law. You seem a bit confused so let me see if I can clear things up.

ADFA stands for the Australian Defence Force Academy. This "academy" is actually the University of New South Wales. At ADFA you combine studying for your degree and learning how to be an Officer in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

ADFA offers degrees in Arts, Business, Science, Technology and Engineering.

Please note that ADFA is just ONE of FEW ways to join as Officer. It just happens to be a good one because you get a degree totally free!

If you are interested in becoming a lawyer for the Australian Defence Force and you would like to not to have to pay for all of your degree then apply for the "Undergraduate Scheme".

ADFA and Undergraduate Scheme have similarities but also have some very big differences. Please have a look at an earlier response of mine in this forum to see the differences.

I know its a lot of information to consume but please contact us and you can either come into one of our centres for an information session or just make an appointment and we explain it all, give you some brochures and answer all of your questions.

Oh yeah, about the "war" stuff. Legal Officers do get the opportunity to be involved in overseas operations. Their role is in giving legal advice to the Commanders who are making the high level decisions on what to do. This means that you may be away from the front line "action" but will still need to know how to use a weapon like everyone else. Although the likelihood of needing to actually use it in combat is relatively low, all ADF personnel must be trained to fight - especially if the fight reaches us!

A good legal officer are worth their weight in gold and are very important to the ADF.

And by the way, don't let anyone tell you wouldn't be able to "cut it" in the ADF because you like pink and you are a girl. I am a woman and an officer in the ADF and happen to love pink too - its just a colour - and they need to get over it!

hi dont know if this thread is still in use but...i did my HSC this year and got an offer from ADFA to become a seaman officer. SO THRILLED!!! but anyway im only 17 dont turn 18 till april...so im torn between going to Scotland next year as a camp instructor, get some "life experience" and then go to ADFA in 07?? im trying to find out if i can defer, whats the chances of that??? agh what to do?
