....when people start abusing the prevlidges of using the table by being completely selfish.

I am talking about people who leave their books on tables and in effect, thinnking that it is a way to reserve the table,. They leave the table for a couple of hours and return.

I am not sure if you are all familiar with the library's policy on this, but to clear it up.

Macquarie University Library assumes no responsibility for the security of any unattended personal property.

Library users are responsible for their possessions at all times and should not leave them unattended.

Personal property must not be left on study desks or in study rooms to ‘reserve’ a space in the Library.

Items left for longer than 15 minutes on study desks or in study rooms may be placed on the floor so that the space may be used by others.

So if u see a vacant seat, ask the person next to it to know how long it has been vacant. If it is vacant for more than 15 min, jsut take the seat.

It may be obvious, but quite a lot of students in the library do not know about this (esp. foreign).

Last week i was in the librarya round 9:15 am, 3/4 of the seats on elvel 3 were empty, with books on them. The room i sat in had 4 vacancies, all had accounting textbooks/notes on them. It took them 2 hours to come back and without sitting on the seats, they just dropped some more notes and the group took off.

Yes I discovered that it was that time of year again today

Where did you read the policy? If I get pissed off enough I am going to do what you said and refer them to the policy.

It always irritates me when that sort of thing happens - though its even worse when they take their things with them and expect 'their' table to be 'reserved' when they come back. Thats happened to me twice so far, and each time the person gets all bitchy with me after like an hour later they come back. Ugghh.

Ok people. We BOS peeps will start a revolution. for now on, if any of us see a bunch of tables with shit on it and nobody there for 15 minutes, we move all of the stuff on the floor in one big pile then urinate on it. Very soon people will get the message or risk having stinky property.
if i get kicked out of uni for doin dat, iam gonna blame it on u!

Maybe people should stop bitching about it, and move the stuff?

lol, Steve will love this thread! That notice thats been put up? Steve basically petitioned the library to do that - a one-man revolution!!

I'm so going to do it too - remove those stinking books, especially the ones around the 'laptop' corner on level 2. Bastards. All of them!!!

People are so slack leaving there stuff there for hours on end. It makes me so angry!! I almost want to question people when they go off somewhere and leave their stuff: "Excuse me, where are you going?... Oh, the toilet? Approximately how long do you think you'll be gone?... Is it a 'number 1', or 'number 2'??" :p

and Jamie, I think your idea would place you somewhere between the 'danger' and 'cultural' model ;)

Usually I get 'nono, sorry no English' as the generic Asian-expects-to-fuck-us-over-response.

I generally reply with pushing all their shit on the ground, and taking their seat, or, alternatively, telling them to take their shit elsewhere or I'm going to steal it. 'Ooh, I need some more notebooks', etc.

It sounds like a plan, but, read in the context of my quote, your strategic use of the word "shit" made me laugh :D

Sweetlemon, I think thats not a bad idea re: leaving a note. I'd probably take notice of it, and try and work myself around it. It seems considerate enough....

I dont think people would call the police immediately (unless they were stupid enough to leave a laptop unoccupied)... They'd probably go and complain to the person in their seat, and then the library, who would say that its policy.

wtf are you kidding?? i'm not mad or picking on you, just confused- how would putting a book there achieve anything? who is "them"... the people who already know what it is like?

I also don't mind the idea about leaving a note, most of the time I want a table for 1 hour max.

Ha HARRR! I've been having a chat with one of the library ladies for three weeks solid about this (numerous occaisons she'd not let me hand in stuff as "lost property"), and today finally I kicked someone off their table and shoved the policy into their hands and they walked off, head hung, well and truly defeated. Muahuah! :D

The problem with the whole system, of course, is you've gotta stand around watching for 15 mins to be legit about it all. Of course, if they come back within that 15 mins, that's up to 14 mins wasted, standing around watching the paint get dryer.

Personally if it doesn't work I'm tempted to go along Rob & Jamie's idea (maybe without the unrination part) and simply dump their stuff in a random spot in the library... oh, you could even set out a library-themed orienteering course.. "Go to HG.51.ma.6, find the 3rd book written by an author starting with FU, page 56, and you'll find your next clue... "

Ok, 15 min aint that long, i once spent that long searching for vacancies, or....

take a coffee break and come back.

Havent seen much of the signs lately, but i did know about them since last year where i once did see a sign, if there ever was a sign, there are not enough of them.

Alot of the culprits seem to be asian students and ECFS students.... accounting books and everything, they really lack the courtesy.

Whats worse are the high school students,. The library should clear this up, HS students should move if a uni student wants the seat. Seeing HS kids wearing their uniform blazers or some kids camp there for a couple of hours working some HSC past exams is frustrating.
