Many of the chemistry basics learnt in the prelim year are not directly examinable in the HSC but content such as balancing equations and writing chemical formulae are assumed knowledge and built on when you do the HSC course.

In order to sit an HSC course you must complete satisfactorily the Preliminary course.

At my school a couple of years ago we had a student who wanted to do a subject in Year 12 that hadn't been studied in Year 11 and the BOS said that the student had to complete extra assignments to satisfy the requirements of the Preliminary course. The student didn't have to do all the work necessary - just do enough extra assignments to complete the minumum requirements of the Preliminary course.

I think the teacher concerned had them complete one of the Year 11 assessment tasks and both the exams as open book exams.

The BOS was satisfied with that and the student successfully completed the course in the HSC year.

Yes, you are correct. To be more specific, the principal of the school has that power.
