I have often written this in exams throughout year 11 and 12...

"Unemployment is defined as the portion of the labour force who want to work, but are unable to find a job. The labour force is the section of the population who are 15 years of age and over, and are either working or actively seeking work. The Labour force consists of:

· Persons aged 15 and over who are currently employed for at least 1 hour a week of paid work, paid leave, those on leave or stood down without pay for less than four weeks, on strike, on workers’ compensation, or receiving payment whilst undertaking full time study.
· Those who are self employed persons who are working for at least one hour per week in their own business or a family business; and
· People of and over the age of 15 and currently looking for and are available for work.

Hence, the labour force does not include:
· Children under 15 years of age
· Full time, non-working students above 15 years of age
· People who perform full time domestic duties
· Unemployed persons who are not willing to actively apply for jobs and attend job interviews or who are not available to start work.
· And People who have retired from the labour force."

Can I just leave it at:

Yes, leave it as that.

Yes, you definitely don't need all that additional stuff. In a short answer, they'd give you 2 lines to define unemployment for 1-2 marks, and in an essay, you'd just need to define the term if it was an essay about unemployment - you wouldn't want to waste time providing all that descriptive material about the labour force etc, as this is wasting valuable time that could be spent providing analysis!
