Currently, I go to Kurt's Mathematics Centre, and I'm not sure if it's actually as useful as it seems to be. I sometimes feel a bit scared to ask questions (because the teacher will probably berate me in front of the class if they're too stupid lol). Also, for a bit of background context, I'm not doing very well at school maths (3rd quartile yikes). If anyone has made the switch from tutoring centres (i.e. Kurt, NGO, Dr Du, etc.) to private tutoring, I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how helpful it is and if moving is actually worth it. My goal is to be ranked 1st in maths (a bit ambitious, but we'll see how it goes). do well in maths competitions (like AMC, AIMO, AMO etc.) and, ideally state rank maths ex1 or ex2. Also, any reccs for private tutors would also be very much appreciated :)

as someone who was rlly bad at maths ( did E1), I always recommend private tutor> class tutoring. Bc in a private tutor they can actually identify your individual weaknesses and focus on ameliorating them. I tried some class tutoring like Matrix, etc, but they weren’t very good bc they would always move faster than I could catch up so I got left behind and ended up barely learning. So def priv/ individual tutor. I have some tutor recs I can message u if u want. If you’re gonna get a priv tutor tho, I’d recommend a student/ uni grad over an actual teacher ( I always find actual teachers/ older tutors kinda scary). Idk tho, maybe some r nice.

Yeah the private tutor over class tutoring thing is definitely true. imo class tutoring is pretty useless, and you could probably do way better just by self learning. You could also say the tutoring itself isn't necessary, which I personally believe. Especially for math competitions, you'll only get as far as the amount of effort you put in, which is independent on whether you do tutoring or not.

I'd disagree. You realistically can't generalise private tutoring over class tutoring, since most of the best tutors work in class settings where it makes them more money. Private tutors in comparison will be far less skilled generally speaking. If we compare private vs class tutoring for the same tutor, then private wins, however it's much easier to find competent tutors teaching in class settings compared to private. Class tutoring isn't "useless", most of the state ranks come from students who do class tutoring. Dr Du alone gets over half the state ranks per year in both extension 1 and 2. On average, you will find that students who do class tutoring get higher results than students who don't.

Tutoring isn't "necessary", but it is great for helping you and making things a lot easier. It isn't absolutely necessary to track your macros and consume the right nutrients when you're trying to grow muscles, but it sure does help a lot more when you do, and you definitely grow muscles much faster. The rate of improvement with tutoring would be much larger in comparison to without tutoring, and if you want to succeed at the top, that extra time you save by tutoring instead of self-learning can be extremely beneficial.

And in like 99% of cases you can't do way better self-learning. I can't logically see how you came to that conclusion. Tutoring is the equivalent of self-learning, except every aspect that makes self-learning tedious is shortened and made more concise, and explained in a much clearer manner.

Yeah fair enough, you mentioned a lot of things that I hadn't really considered. Just wanted to mention though that students who do tutoring and get higher scores doesn't imply that tutoring itself is resulting in the higher scores, because often people who are already smart go to tutoring in hopes of doing even better. Whether they do better or not depends. I won't say that tutoring doesn't help, and it can. But a lot of tutoring places just have teachers teaching students content, which isn't really that useful since you could easily do this yourself. Sure it might speed up the process for some people, but in a class setting, the speed and depth that the class goes at is dictated by the teacher and doesn't leave a lot to the student. By self-studying, you allow yourself to speed through certain things or slow down at certain parts to get a full understanding of the content, rather than having to spend extra time later outside of class going back over everything.
