its bad for a universities reputation if heaps of people fail all the time, it makes it look like they cant teach. the computing subjects have those liason meetings where students go whinge at the lecturers. i went to one or two and in the computing dept they're very worried about things like fail rates which is why they make stuff like tutorial work compulsory, cause they found that people who do no tute work usually do pretty badly in the course.

if anything they want you to pass so they can bring in more students next year who'll be paying 25% more :p

i dont think my exams are hard. i think they accurately test the content of the course, and theres always one or two questions i cant do, cause they need to throw in a challenge for the super bright studetns as well.

they purposely make hard exams.
they want most ppls to fail so that they get more fees in the long run.
The exams are easy, if you study and work hard.
The exams are hard, if you don't study and don't work hard.
It follows that many people don't work hard, and the exams are hard.
Therefore, Theorem 5.2 holds =p

yep

if you only fail one subject in 1st year youre doing heaps better than me :p my gpa is still good enough to do honours if i so choose, and honours applications dont just go on gpa either.

its not uncommon that people who do not so great in first year end up doing pretty well. i fall into this group and i know a few others.

its also not uncommon for people to do really well in 1st year then start going downhill.

cant really generalize tho too much, i know people who have had perfect scores all the way through, and people who have barely scraped by all the way through. i think its fair to say if you put in a genuine effort youll do ok.

however you like to put it .. eg study hard good marks, no study bad marks...

yes that is true for all unis..

but the fact here is that macquarie uni does have the 'Hardest' exams out of all the unis in sydney..

the uni thinks its good, so it makes the exams even harder than say top unis like unsw.

now that is a big no no
puts people off from going to macquarie uni.

once all this leaks out to the new hsc students
demand for macquarie uni will decline.

also about the easy transfer scheme it markets.. it isnt really that easy, as one would see a pass average at macquarie uni could possibly be equivalent to a credit average at another uni due to its more difficult exams.

sif macquarie exams are harder than the exams in other unis. all unis will have hard exams and easy exams.

how can u say that a P avg at mac is like a C avg at another uni?

i don't think they have the hardest exams...

but i do think they place a huge weighting on the final exams. 3 of my 4 subject finals are worth 70% of my overall grade!! :( which might be used to explain the higher than average failure rates?!?!

I have 65%, 80%, 90% and 70%.. it's better this way, because there is too much cheating if it's mostly non-final assessments =p

definitely agreed.

my econometrics lecturer got so fed up with plagiarism/cheating that he made the final worth 100% and all assesments were optional for feedback purposes only. it's definitely better.
