the wide screen inspirons are pretty decent.

and no, not all Dell laptop casing's are cheap and flimsy. The Dell Latitude Range is rather solid, and a few drops to the floor won't do much damage. Then again, the latitude range is slightly more expensive than the Inspirons.

All laptops, around that price range need atleast some level of care.
Abuse them, and they'll break.

Someone's being brainwashed by an anti Dell campaign

I am certainly not aware of any overheating problems with Dell. Certainly all notebooks have a tendency to overheat in high temperature (35+) due to its form factor, but most cope very well in normal conditions, especially Pentium M/Core models.

Have to agree with fatmuscle on the Latitude range. Their cases are absolutely solid for a non rugged notebook. Sure some are designed survive 10 feet falls and are spillproof etc, but the Latitude can easily deal with what everyday life throws at it.

toshiba's also have their downsides.
It will depend on what range toshiba you're buying - similarly with dell.

I'm not sure if Dell stores display their latitude range?

I wouldn't buy a Dell just because of the way they advertise on TV ( you know, call and pay with ure credit card ):

"Get this great computer on which u can multitask and play games... 256mb of memory" ... :\

Please some1 shoot them. Tho you may get a printer for $70, USB isn't included and you have to pay for it. Where was this assembled? Joe Anus's Water Closet?

Bah... Okay that little rant is over.

Sounds like they are trying to rip the people who don't know much about computers off. So to me they appear as complete arseholes. Anyways, I'm sure they have some nice stuff, but I'm not interested.

Sounds like you don't know much about it either.

I do have to say Dell's Core offerings are very good. Both the 6400 and 9400 do what they were designed for very well, and at a compatible price. Too bad I'm looking for a Merom/Santa Rosa tablet with dedicated graphics. Otherwise I would have got the 6400.

No I was just saying from the order over the phone ads that they run thru morning tv shows and stuff. And I will repeat: Im sure they have nice/good stuff.. but it isn't what I have seen on tv. I just havent investigated into buying a Dell, so my opinion is merely formed on commercials, which I clearly pointed out.

Hence you just admitted you don't know much about Dell since you never researched it.

Really? As in an OEM Edition?

I'm looking to upgrade my 2000 laptop (SUSE isn't suitable for split-screens used primarily for multimedia yet), so if you're serious, maybe you can chuck it all the way to my place? ;-)
