So ive seen a lot of people from my class joining ace specialist for economics tutoring, but idk if it is really necessary especially since tutoring is quite expensive. Any thoughts?
You have to consider the benefit you might get from tutoring verses the cost of it. You shouldn't just go to a tutoring place solely because other people are going there. This is because different types of tutoring work better for different people. For example, if you are a fast learner and someone who is dedicated to doing their work and homework consistently then a group style of tutoring would work well and probably save you money. However, if you struggle to keep up to pace in a faster learning environment than you probably want an individual tutor. Which may cost more but will give you better improvements in your understanding of the subject.
In saying that from my perspective as someone who had gone to tutoring centres and private tutors during my HSC and now currently tutoring HSC students, tutoring can be very helpful and elevate your marks because you get more exam based feedback and preparation compared to school teaching, however, this all depends on one thing the student and their own initiative in studying
If you don't do work outside the tutoring lesson then you are never going to actually benefit from it much
In terms of dozens of students I have tutored I can say this with a very high certainty that just because someone goes to tutoring there is no guarantee they will get good marks or improve their grades drastically. The benefit a student can get from it is solely dependent upon how much work they do outside the tutoring class by doing homework provided by the tutor, past papers and other school work, because if you just go to the tutoring lesson once a week for maybe 1 or 2 hours you do some work there maybe understand some stuff and by a week's time you have probably forgot everything or most of the stuff if you didnt go away and do other work
A decent portion of students who go tutoring never actually fully actually utilise it properly. Like for example many tutors offer to mark homework or mark exam responses, but if the student doesn't take initiative and do the homework seriously or submit exam responses or drafts for assignments there is nothing the tutor can do to fix this because at the end of the day the student is the one who will be sitting the exams so even if the tutor knows all the content and explains it effectively its all down to the student
I have seen this with many students who wish to get good marks but don't put in the associated effort that goes along with achieving those marks, and often it seems like they just go to tutoring because their parents made them do so
On the flip side of this I have also tutored students who at the start were answering questions at an average level because maybe their school teacher wasn't the best or the homework set by the school didn't really focus on exam response writing. These students did all the homework assigned by the tutor, actively asked questions in the lesson and overall had a positive attitude to caring about their education and they improved immensely from the help I was able to provide them because they listened in the lesson and went away and did the work needed to make sure they could understand the content as well
