International Business, is it really useful or not? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, i really want to do a course like international business next year, it seems to be a nice fit of what i want to do, but i wonder if it is a practical course? Looking at the UAC description, and the ANU description, it looks like a nice little 3 year course, with business and an Asian or European language (id go asian). But i wonder if the Business you do for this course is useful for later years, for getting a job or for doing a postgraduate course? So is it worth it or not? ty =D

Firstly, don't worry about the practicality of the course, if you like it just do it. That said, business + asian language is a great combo. What will restrict your career prospects is what kind of business you specialise in. I'd expect IB would generally go down accounting/marketing/management or a combination (I'm just guessing based on what I know about the degree, don't take my word for this).

The IB courses I've done have been interesting and I can see the usefulness in them. They teach you about the different business cultures and philosophies. That said, I'm not sure how skilled you come out as in terms of getting a job in business...obviously you get the language.

I've only done a few, but each of the courses has been really easy and kind of seems like a waste of time to me in that you could learn about this stuff w/o paying uni fee's. The best analogy I can give is it's like doing an arts degree with a language and then having all business/marketing courses to fill it up instead of politics/IR etc..

You should try find out more but from my limited perspective doing something like commerce/asian studies seems like it would set you up much better for going into international business...especially as you can do some of those courses if you want to anyway whilst you can actually come out skilled in accounting/finance.

The only other interesting observation I had were the honours students in IB were doing economics and commerce degrees rather than IB.

I'm not going to comment on the IB degree, but remember that commerce/asian studies is also open to you if you want to do an asian language and a business/commerce degree.
