I found an interesting fuel economy study that compares the E10, Regular and Premium fuels.

For those interested, here is the full video: Video - Fuel types compared - Drive

In a summary, they ran 3 identical camrys on the three different fuels in the same environment.

Results:

Premium used the least fuel.
Unleaded comes in second in fuel usage.
E10 is worst.

Unleaded is cheapest to run.
Premium and E10 are slightly more expensive, the differences are negligible.

Just wondering, does anyone here get good economy with premium (excluding people with forced induction who have to run their car on premium)?

Definitely get a bit further with premium, couldn't tell you exactly how much. The benefits of getting premium aren't just better economy though. It is refined to a higher quality and is generally better for your engine, saving you maintenance costs.

Mine is 10:1, but like I said, premium is good for other reasons too.

dude wtf, it can't be close to 10

most generic non perfomance engines are at the 8-8.5:1 mark, and the autech silvia was 11.7:1

EDIT: yeah the main reason we use it is cos it doesn't wreck the engine like ethanol blends did/do

8-8.5:1 is pretty low compression....

My recollection for NA is:

8 = low
9 = normal
10+ = high

Shift down for forced induction:

8 = normal
9 = high
10+ = very high

Doesn't surprise me that ethanol mixtures are crap.

You can make good ethanol mixtures, and ethanol infact has a higher octane ratio than petrol. It is less dense and has less KJ/L in it though, from memory.

Well I fully admit to not exactly knowing anything of substance about ethanol in fuel

I just figure if they are trying to make fuel cheaper by adding something, that something is going to in turn be cheap/bad quality

Will be pleasantly surprised if that is not the case

Unfortunately that is the case, and they use ethanol purely because it's cheaper and it's then made to a low standard.

my super sprots car peugeot (wish is broken atm :( ) wants 95ron min

unleaded 91 causes it to start and idle shit for ages, fucks with the cats or someshit idk the engine light comes on lol, it isnt supposed to take 91 but idk

95 is just normal smooth idling, better on fuel and shit

98 gives a noticible increase in power and smoothness and fuel economy and i can usually pretty easily justify the 10c per litre price increase.

E10 is about the same as 95, just normal. sometimes plays up like 91, probably bad batches or someshit idk

Yeah, never buy ethanol, it costs more to run and the supposed environmental benefits are bullshit.

I doubt any savings that may be had in maintenance costs from using premium would outweigh the extra cost of the fuel.

As I understand it, ethanol blends are fine, you can run as high percentage ethanol as you like and it's cool, so long as you have an engine specifically designed to run on ethanol. As no Australian car is built to run on ethanol, safety and engine life isn't assured.

I was so pissed the other day when I realised my local Caltex has phased out 91 Unleaded and only has E10 and 95/98 Vortex! What a jip.

(note: in current GFC I have stopped using 98 in my Civic; but I found using 95/98 definitely makes a lot of difference in fuel economy; and using E10 to be crap)

The general pattern here seems to be that E10 is crap. :rofl: Heh, I've just doubled my engine size (from old 2L to more modern 3.8L), switched to 98 and my fuel economy is actually the same or better.

Well you'd hope that switching to 98 will improve fuel economy... an old 2L may be very inefficient whereas a modern 3.8L (what car btw?) could be very good at sipping.
