You know how a lot of bands release an album with the most beautiful instrumental?

They're just jamming on their instruments, showing what they're made of? That they don't need vocals or lyrics to create atmosphere?

Could you guys name a few?

I have to say I'm in love with "Voice of the Soul" by Death. It's just acoustic and electrical guitar doing the most amazing things. Those guitars are making love in that song.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you mean bands which are usually vocal, releasing a purely instrumental album? Cause I know alot of bands which are NATURALLY instrumental in all their albums.

- Virgil Donati's bands (On The Virg, Planet X feat. Derek Sherinian) - This guy is the most amazing drummer I have ever seen, full stop. The complexity and eloquence of his drumming syncopation is unprecedented. Plays mostly technical rock and alternative music.
- Pat Metheny Group - Jazz guitarist, alot of smooth Jazz stuff, probably not for most of you out there but I really like this guy's music.
- Fattburger - Smooth Jazz
- Dave Weckl band - Funk, Fusion and smooth Jazz instrumentals from the well known American drummer. Alot of his Latin stuff absolutely kicks ass.
- L.A Big Band - Awesome Smooth Jazz shit.
- Darryn Farrugia - Aussie session drummer, makes alot of instrumental stuff
- Frank Gambale - Instrumental guitar oriented music
- Chick Corea - Awesome pianist, been around in the 'instrumentally oriented' music industry for awhile now..

.... list goes on and on...

Nightwish - Crimson Tide (I *think* that's what it's called)
Nine Inch Nails - A Warm Place
Nine Inch Nails - Just Like You Imagined

... The best 3 I could think of.

mm, lol :p

Two bands that come to my mind are Korpiklaani and Alamaailman Vasarat, both are rather bombastic scandinavian folk bands. Though I'm not sure if they'll create the atmosphere you're after. For atmosphere, you can't go farther than alot of Agalloch's work (both vocal and instrumental, but they have some beautiful instrumentals) and Nest, which is a soft, ambient group that produces some lovely synth music combined with traditional instruments (the kantele mainly). Also if you like Pink Floyd, you should check out an Australian group by the name of Virgin Black or another band called Sleepless. Porcupine Tree and In the woods may both be another good bet, though most of their stuff isnt instrumental.

Also, you can't beat jazz for a bit of groove :p

If you want some samples etc add me on MSN.

Yeah they are good. Therefore their CDs are impossible to find (not even mayhem/red eye or utopia stocks them), though they all happily stock Nazi shit from that traitor Varg.

Bastards, I'm just going to buy off ebay from now on :(

To Live Is To Die for sure

any instrumentals by Nile
to seriously consider To Live Is To Die by Metallica as an instrumental is debatable...as there are "lyrics to it"

i'd suggest album strange beautiful guitar/surfing with the alien by joe satriani. all instrumental albums

or from metallica

call of ktulu
orion
pulling teeth (anesthesia)
any more im missing?
