are school rankings (as in entire school in the state - not personal internal ranks) even important in terms of atar? because internal marks are moderated against exam raw marks anyway, and the school ranks are determined after HSC so how relevant is it?

i just wonder because all the people posting atar estimations say "my school was ranked in the the top ~ last year"

It's not relevant at all. ATAR estimators use it to figure out how strong or weak a cohort is. For example, a person is coming 1st in every subject at James Ruse. Will they get a higher ATAR than someone at say... Mount Druitt High School, with the same subjects?

Almost certainly. So that's why we use school rank.

The reason these programmes use last year's school rank is that is gives an idea of the possible rank of the school this year but...your actual school rank that will affect you won't be determined until your results are known as your results, as a cohort, will determine the school's rank for this year. Then next year's cohort at your school will use this year's rank in these programmes.

Unless you are at very strong schools e.g. James Ruse you should be aware that school's can move markedly from one year to the next - especially those lower ranked schools.

If you are the top ranked in your school at English the High external mark become your internal mark.

I used English as an example.

For any subject, the top ranked person in your school will get the high external mark as their internal mark, then the rest is moderated based on gaps between the rest of the marks.

Is that the same with construction and industrial technology? what about being in the top 3?
I said any subject.

If you are number two your internal mark will be moderated from the your schools external marks results through the gaps between the marks.
