If you were an employer

Would you hold it against a prospective employee for failing a subject?

Depends what degree you completed and when they failed, and what they failed.

Uni's throw in useless subjects into some degrees, and if you failed it in first year, I wouldn't care. (unless it was an important core subject, but in that case, you'd need to repeat anyway)

i think it depends on the competition.. i mean, if everyone you're interviewing has a fail.. then it doesn't matter. and marks are the be-all and end-all. we're always told they're after well-rounded people, so if you're well-rounded.. you'll be fine.

What subject, hunny?

A lot of employers won't look on your transcript, but some will... so it depends on the job, too.

hey cyan yeah thats what i plan to do or at least a D (that is if i still decide to keep the bba part of my degree...

Acst101! .. arggh i just havn't had time for it at all throughout the semester, i know i could do okay in it though, i've been neglecting it totally...:'(

Here's how I'de hope they'de see it...

employer: "So did you fail any subjects at uni"
me: "Yes sir, it was a bad semester all around, but i did it again the next semester and i got a credit/distinction"
employer: " I will take the fact you did it again and got c/d into consideration, it shows that you are capable and even shows your determination to blah blah etc

Arrgh eye hope i can find an employer that doesn't look at my results. I don't want to work at the big4 or anything... probably something like Hays or something similar in calibre

Man I hate uni!

*random thought* Who the hell is Jezzmo, I see his randomz on here all the time but I don't know anything about him. With all of you guys i know something bout you.

I wouldnt mind if it were a first year subject, thats forgivable I think, because its all new etc. etc and all that jazz.

But that being said, we're probably all thinking the same thing (its all okay) because we're students in this position and its always different when you're on one side of the fence to the other.

On your academic transcript, does it state every subject you ever did (both pass and fail), or only those which you passed (seeing that you have to go back and make up that credit point you missed out on for failing)?

Every subject, passed and failed, as well as the actual mark.

Until they look at your transcript.

I was assuming the original question was in terms of a proper grown-up job post uni, in which case they require you to give ALL your uni marks...which are then checked with the uni.

If I was an employer 30% of whether I would hire someone or not would be based on their credentials and 70% would be based on the kind of person they were. For me a fail in a uni subject would mean pretty much nothing, but I wouldn't hire someone with multiple fails.

funny you mention that. because i was just looking at my law take home exam when i suddenly thought 'goodbye gpa.' I am near certain my gpa will not remain at that for this semester (and in a way i am glad, because as soon as it is no longer 4 then i wont be so obssessed with marks!... it may seem strange, but it makes sense).

Employers dont consider what University you came from thus they must consider your GPA as that is comparible in potential employees. Thus a fail would lower your chances if someone else has had a better record.

All you have to say is:

The University does not always determine how well you perform, it is self determination and willingness to do well that counts, how much effort you put in. There are always high achievers no matter what school you go to or even if you don't go to school (Einstein). Bill Gates can teach you how to use a computer but you wont always understand unless you put in effort.
