Hello BOS user's, I am a student just beginning year 12, and I don't know if I should pursue the often contentious sector of History Extension.

My subjects are listed in my signature, and I think the addition of 4U maths with HEX will be extremely demanding, yet extremely rewarding. There are lots of people who are in my class, many of which are my best friends. The thing is, the teacher says the time is flexible and I can join the class whenever I feel ready, just as long as i keep up to date with my project. For reference, the class and teacher are both really good, but that comes with limitations, as it also very competitive.

Personally, I will seek to drop Legal, and then drop Chem if I am committed with Hex and 4U, which will leave me with 11 units. I am not worried for the workload of Hex + all my other subjects, because I feel I have a good schedule/weekly routine.

The only thing holding me back is there is a deadline for mid next week (literally 4/5 days) to have chosen 2 topics, and have made 10 questions in total (5 for each). People in the class have already come up with their topics/questions and have extensively researched, however for me, I have done little research on the project and what topics I should do because of my other subjects.

I love history, but I am afraid I am not as historically aware as many people in my class who do both ancient and modern (at least half the class). There is a lot of time until the project is due, but I must do a proposal by week 9, which is in 4/5 weeks.

Sorry if this is long, I just had to vent. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I am a now former History Extension student since I just graduated lol,

By the sounds of it, I think that you should consider doing History Extension if you have everything down in the bag. In terms of being historically aware, bare in mind that history extension is about the construction of history and representations of the past as opposed to say "hardcore" studying WW2. So you will engage in questions such as "what is history?, Who are the historians?, how has the practice changed over time? etc." All you really need is that general sense of the context behind what you are studying and then you build on from there.

In terms of competition, please don't focus on that as what you should instead invest your energy on is what you can do to better yourself and continue the so called, "dialectum" with your teacher. It is more fruitful to focus on what you can do to achieve the best outcome and keep good terms with your teacher than focusing on what your peers are doing. Easier said than done but trust me, it will make history extension more enjoyable.

As for your major work, people don't get the questions until the end of the term. Try having a range of questions then, narrowing it down. OH AND RECORD IT in your logbook too because after all, that is part of your project ;)

(P.s. I'll attach this awesome video which will hopefully give you a sense of history extension)
