Recently we have been looking into thefuture religious landscape of australia bassed on sensis data from 1945 to present and formulating our own ideas around this. I have a strong suspision that this will come up in assessment as an exam question and was wondering if any one had some bright ideas about how this question best be answered.
Some of the things that have to be taken into acount are:

  • The decline of more "traditional" Christian religions, and an influx into the more lively of the penecostal and evangelist churches while keeping in mind the 6% decrease in the religious identification with christianity from 1991 to 2001 (taken from ABScensus stats)
  • The unification of churches (presbyterian, methodist, and congregational) to create the Uniting church (june 1977).
  • Multiculturalism in australia due to immigration
  • Changing views of population
  • 15% increase of "no religion" from 1901 to 2001 with the most rapid increase uccuring from the 1960's onwards (ABS Census stats)
Thoughts, ideas, and possible hypothesises of the future religious climate would be very much appreciated.
