These 'conditions': do you think that's context i.e. what was happening/ what was available to him or how his original apparatus did it?

I would write mostly about the historical context.

Ie. During that time, Germany received their source of nitrates from Chile that was extractred form guano.

When WW1 broke out, a blockade was set up to prevent this shipement reaching Germany.

Since they were key to creating fertilisers and explosives, it threatened starvation as well as losing the war quite quickly. This then leads to Haber developing a method of developing ammonia from its component elements
