read the question a few times

highlight or underline key words/phrases that will feature throughout your whole essay

jot down links between the key words and each of your prepared ideas/body paragraphs. unintentionally I used to turn essay questions into a mind map, drawing arrows from diff parts of the question to the diff links I came up with on the spot, shouldn't take more than 5 mins to really understand what the question is asking and how you can apply your unique texts and ideas to it

practice is key, the more past paper questions you do in timed conditions, the more experienced you'll become at using your planning time efficiently without wasting it
