There are 489999444563 threads like this. The search function exists for a reason. Obviously, there is no general rule because what works for one person may not work for another. If you get bored easily, alternate between subjects. if you prefer to get one thing done at a time, stick to one per night.

She probably just wants to know how many hours a night other people are studying.

I didn't do any actual study for the first 3 terms of my HSC.
Do your homework each night. Occasionally read over your notes.
Then, in the holidays and weeks before your exams start, study your butt off.
Worked for me.

5 hours was recommended. But I never actaully do more than 2 hours when I keep drifting off and thinking of something else.

this advice sounds perfect.
Personally, although I definately didn't study effectively during prelim, I now know how I should be studying as per different subjects.
For example, I know that in addition to writing notes for Bio, I also need to be doing past papers, because in my yearly exam, I struggled to answer the questions on the exam, even though I had heaps of information in my head.
Notes, at least general topic ones, weren't so helpful for Ancient History, but if they were very specific to the syllabus, they helped more.
But I only learnt this though trial and error. I guess you should be using the earlier parts of the year to find out how to study best as per each subject. Dont fret too much about the "best" way to study or "how much" study is required to get a certain mark. If you work hard enough, it will all fall into place.

I find it really interesting that people actually 'study' each night. For me, all I did was type up my notes like a week before an exam, then read them lightly throughout the week. When the weekend prior to the exam comes up, I just study my notes pretty much 24/7. And hell, I barely do homework anymore.
