hey all.... hope all is going well for u so far

need some advice - i want to know how many topics i should aim to know really well....

at the moment, i can do (attempt) almost any question (at least getting some marks for...) for complex, polynomials, graphs, integration, harder 3u....

i can do the BASICS of conics

Should i worry about trying to learn more at this stage? should be able to learn the extremely simple stuff in mechanics and volumes if i need to....

Can you get back to me soon? Also.... can u give an indication of which topics u r reasonably comfortable with, and as a raw mark, what u think u would be able to get?

i am thinking i would be able to get a little over 50% at the mo. if i work over some of my stuff, i think i should be able to get closer to 60...

good luck and all...

I'm comfortable with everything except circle geo, and I expect a mark somewhere in the 90-105 range. Go for the volumes, because usually those are easy marks.

If you havent learnt volumes by now, I wouldnt bother. Some people for some reason just dont get it. However I dont think resisted motion is a very difficult topic to learn in a few hours.

I can do most questions except wierd harder 3u questions in q6\7\8. Some of the harder conics and volumes stuff is difficult for me as well. Aiming for 85-90 range

Me too that's about all I know.

Have a look at volumes though as I find them fairly allright. Friction is pretty easy too. Circle motion ect UGH, don't bother.

I would be happy with a raw of 50% and worst case should pick up about 35%. I'm going to study a bit now and should be able to get something like 60% maybe.

Why on earth are you coming into the HSC without topics learnt?
I'm curious.

our teacher put a lot of time into both graphs and integration, and the 3 kids that do 4 unit at our school are really confident with those topics, hoping 15/15 for those questions... the harder mechanics is a worry, as is conics and circle geometry.. my theory with volumes is attempt the question to the best of ur ability, then move on, for a 3 or 4 mark question, its not worth wasting the 10 minutes going back through ur answer if u think ur wrong... polynomials a nd complex numbers dont pose too much of a problem, but i think the fact that our 4 unit hsc exam is in 4 days is the only thing im worried bout :( arrgh!!

we have pretty much learned everything

its very easy to pick up marks in volumes,
resistant moiton i wouldn't reccomend b/c in hsc they normally give you one that requires lots of manipulation

if u learnt he basic of conics like sketching and finding the different stuff (directirx, assymptote, foci etc), u can pick up some easy marks there

i am hoping for between 90 - 100

our teacher said anything over 100 will give u above 95%

yeah the conics questions in the earlier parts will be a breeze, easy marks... but the stuff in q7 will require a lot of knowledge and i just dont have that lol, i hate conics... conics will be what separates the good from the really good

No it doesn't. Its a fucking stupid topic which requires shitloads of algebra bashing, and requires more luck than skill.

haha well that too... so not only do you have to be really brilliant to get them right, you have to be arsey too lol... im not either of them so i have no chance

yeah graphing can get messy.. if you dont get it straight away it can get very complicated, looking for POI and asymptotes and crap... just nasty... mechanics is nice, our teacher is brilliant at it, helped a lot when we came to that topic

Haha but in graphing when all else fails you can always revert back to plot the dot!

HAHA damn straight... if 4 units method dont work, you always have your yr 8 maths skills to fall back on :)

i dont have a particular technique when going into exams but i make sure i dont get bogged down... if i cant get a question i just move on, get through the exam in the time limit and go back afterwards... helps a lot, because if u dont know wat ur meant to do but u encounter a similiar question later on and u get that, u know wat method needs to be applied to the previous q... helps a lot, particularly in integration and polynomials

My approach to 4U Maths is that is is not necessary to know all topics perfectly. You should be able to do basics in all, and be confident in most. This will get you in the 90s (HSC Mark), well, it got me there ...
