Q: The first digit of a six-digit number is 1. This digit 1 is now move from the first digit position to the end, so that it becomes the last digit. The new six-digit number is now 3 times larger than the original number. What are the last three digits of the original number?

Let the 5 digits after the 1 be m. Therefore your original number is 100 000 + m. If all the digits of m are moved one to the left, and the 1 moves to the end, we are left with 10m + 1 (by multiplying by ten, we add a zero to the end which results in all the digits moving one to the left). Now 10m+1=3(100000+m) as told above. Solving this equation you get m=42857, hence the orginal number is 142857, and the last three digits of the original number are 857.
